WWT welcomes its first Greengage group!
We’re excited to share that the very first Greengage meet kicked off last week at the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) in Somerset, and it was a brilliant start to the programme!
Participants were welcomed on site for a short induction session. The group gathered in the beautiful cob building, where they took part in relaxed ice-breakers, had a chance to get to know each other, and shared thoughtful conversations.
The team at WWT shared more about what participants can expect over the coming weeks, from hands-on nature-based activities to time for reflection, connection, and simply enjoying being outdoors. The atmosphere was supportive, full of curiosity and excitement (and a bit of nervous energy too!), but everyone appeared to have left feeling more confident and enjoyed the day.
Programme lead Jenny McCubbin said she was “delighted at how well the group gelled and looked after one another,” noting that the atmosphere was full of curiosity, kindness, and mutual support, even if there were a few nerves to begin with.
The team are looking forward to the first of the six weekly programme sessions today and the theme is all about dragonflies! This is in keeping with WWT’s wider seasonal theme running across sites which celebrates these captivating creatures.

The session will begin with a pond dipping adventure, where participants will search for dragonfly larvae and other pond life hiding beneath the surface. With any luck, they will also spot dragonflies and damselflies darting across the water in their full, shimmering glory.
After a welcome tea break, the group will take a closer look at the beauty of dragonfly wings through detailed images, before getting creative and crafting their own. It promises to be a session full of reflection and hands-on exploration.
Each weekly session at WWT will have its own unique theme, inviting participants to explore the natural world through different lenses. Upcoming themes include mud, light, birds, trees, and a celebration of nature’s bounty.
We look forward to sharing more updates over coming weeks, including insights from the programmes, reflections from the programme leads, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of the different nature-based activities.
While our spaces are full at WWT, we are still looking for participants to attend the sessions at Eden Project and the Sensory Trust, which are both located in Cornwall.
