In a nutshell

Greengage is providing people with a six week programme of nature-based activities in the South West of the UK.

We are working with several organisations to deliver these activities, including the Eden Project, Sensory Trust, and Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. Sessions are about a half-day in duration, take place on a weekday, and participants will attend one session a week for six weeks.

This initiative is part of a research project based at the University of Exeter’s Penryn campus. It will help us gather reliable evidence on how engaging with nature can affect people experiencing anxiety or depression.

Taking part

Spaces to join the sessions at our sites in Somerset and Cornwall have now been filled.

Spaces were open to adults seeking support with mild to moderate anxiety or depression. Taking part involved:

✅ Attending a weekly group-based session for 5-6 weeks

✅ Answering three sets of mental health questionnaires

We had several other important criteria for who could take part in this study.

Dr. Katie Gibbs, Research Fellow at the University of Exeter, explains more about the Greengage project and what taking part involved.

A common experience

Mental health problems affect one in four people in any given year.

They can include common issues, such as depression and anxiety, and importantly, changes in mental health are a common human experience. Just like physical health, everybody needs to take care of their mental health.
